DIFS Encourages Michiganders to Plan for Health Insurance Coverage Now for 2026
(LANSING, MICH) The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is encouraging Michiganders to be ready for the upcoming Health Insurance Marketplace Open Enrollment period, which starts Nov. 1. A record 530,000 Michiganders are currently enrolled in health insurance through the Marketplace. Recent federal changes, as well as expiring tax credits, mean it has never been more important to review your insurance coverage and make a selection during the upcoming Open Enrollment period.
Fair enough so far...
“Health insurance improves health outcomes and helps protect your family’s health and financial future,” said Director Anita Fox. “As we head into Open Enrollment season now is the time for, Michiganders to start preparing for and thinking about their health insurance options for 2026. Michiganders who need help finding or maintaining health insurance or understanding their options can call DIFS at 877-999-6442, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or visit Michigan.gov/HealthInsurance.”
OK...
To get ready for open enrollment, Michiganders should gather important tax and income verification documents, take the time to shop around and compare health insurance plans, and keep track of the shortened deadlines and new requirements listed below. Michiganders who utilize HealthCare.gov for their health insurance needs should be aware of the following changes:
- Health Insurance Marketplace policyholders may need to be prepared to update their income, immigration status, and other information quickly, as the amount of time allowed to resolve data discrepancies was shortened from 150 days to 90 days.
Got it, yes...
- This year, information about monthly premiums for 2026 may not be included in notices insurers send to their current customers. Michiganders should be sure to log into HealthCare.gov long before Dec. 15, 2025, and review their information during Open Enrollment if they automatically re-enroll.
Wait, say what now??
Don't get me wrong: Yes, all current enrollees absolutely should log into their ACA exchange account (either HC.gov or the state-based exchange in 21 states), but the carriers sending out renewal notices without estimates of their 2026 premiums is...unusual.
Related: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, my own family's current carrier, sent us an email inviting us to do early window shopping for 2026 via the actual carrier website (not HealthCare.Gov, which won't be live until Nov. 1st), but when I plugged in our information and got to the "enter income to check for tax credit eligibility" I received the following error message no matter what I entered as the household income:
So, yeah, it appears that the carriers themselves still haven't plugged in the final tax credit calculation data yet--even on their internal systems--just 11 days out from Open Enrollment beginning.
Anyway...
- New enrollees—including those who enroll outside of open enrollment due to a life event or income change—may need to prove eligibility before they can receive subsidies that help offset the cost of their monthly premium.
- Looking ahead to next year, open enrollment will be shortened by a month—ending December 15, 2026, rather than January 15, 2027.
Open Enrollment for 2026 health insurance runs from November 1, 2025, through January 15, 2026. Consumers must select a plan no later than December 15, 2025, for coverage to start on January 1, 2026. Consumers who miss ACA deadlines will, in most instances, have to wait a full year to obtain coverage.
DIFS has created a video to help consumers learn about health insurance and get answers to their open enrollment questions on the Health Insurance Marketplace, and it can be viewed at Michigan.gov/HealthInsurance.
Open Enrollment navigators are also available to provide free, local assistance to consumers who need help signing up for health coverage. For assistance, visit HealthCare.gov or call 800-318-2596.
