#COVID19 Data: Nightly update of the sick and the dead.

Since tracking and analyzing data is what I'm best known for...and since I'm mostly stuck sitting in front of the computer all day whether I like it or not these days anyway...I've started my own daily COVID-19 spreadsheet.

Again, I'm not the one who compiled the data itself--many other teams with far better resources than I have are doing that--but I'm pulling their work together and adding some additional context, such as per capita info by state/territory.

Nationally:

• 4.66 million tests have been completed in the U.S. (1.4% of the population)
• 31,500 more Americans tested positive today. 880,000 have tested positive to date (2.65 per thousand)

• Another 2,300 Americans died today. Nearly 50,000 have died to date.
• The U.S. Case Fatality Rate (CFR) now stands at 5.7%.

• The U.S. case count has increased 30% over the past week, and the total U.S. death toll has increased by 44%.

New York:

• 696,000 tests have been completed on New Yorkers to date (3.6% of the population)
• 6,300 more New Yorkers tested positive today. Over 268,000 have tested positive to date (1.4% of the population).

• 507 more New Yorkers died today. 20,800 have died so far. That's more than 1 out of every 1,000 New Yorkers.

• New York's CFR is 7.8%, second only to the Northern Mariana Islands and Michigan.
• New York's cases have increased 19% over the past week. The death toll has risen 30%.

Michigan (my home state):

• 128,000 tests have been completed on Michiganders to date (1.3% of the population)
• 1,300 more Michiganders tested positive today. 35,300 have tested positive to date (3.5 per thousand).

• 164 more Michiganders died today. 2,977 Michiganders have died of COVID-19 to date...the exact same number of people who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

• Michigan continues to have the highest CFR of any state at 8.4%.
• Michigan's cases have increased 21% in the past week. Our death toll has increased 42%.

Other States/Territories:

• Rhode Island continues to have tested the highest per capita of their population (4.2%). Kansas has tested the lowest per capita of any state (7.3 per thousand), although American Samoa only tested 3 of their 55,000 residents. I've actually separated out American Samoa from my spreadsheet for now since they still claim not to have a single case of COVID-19.

• Nebraska, Iowa and North Dakota all increased their total cases by 80% or more over the past week.

• Wyoming, the U.S. Virgin Islands, West Virginia, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Montana all saw their death tolls increase by 100% or more over the past week.

• PERSPECTIVE: While the relative positions of the first dozen states in terms of cases per capita have stayed fairly consistent lately, it's worth noting that Georgia's 14th position, at 2.06 cases per thousand, would have placed it 9th just 10 days ago or 4th just 20 days ago. In fact, Georgia is doing worse per capita today than New Jersey was on March 30th.
