Trump: Pass Trumpcare tomorrow or I'll take my ball and go home!

If it was any other politician, I'd call this a strategic bluff to try and get the bill to pass:

UPDATE: 7:42 p.m.: President Donald Trump is demanding a vote Friday in the House on the Republican plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said. If the bill fails, Trump is prepared to move on and leave Obamacare in place, Mulvaney said.

In the case of Donald Trump, however, he could mean it. He doesn't actually give a rat's ass about healthcare or helping people anyway; the only reason he wants to repeal the ACA is because a) it'd let him stick it to Barack Obama; b) it'd give him another tax cut and c) he'd get to brag about "winning" by finally slaying the mighty Obamacare Beast, etc.

Assuming the vote does fail and Trump really does decide "eh...whatever", it's important to keep in mind that a) Paul Ryan and the Congressional GOP will still likely refuse to pass any legislation to actually fix most of the actual problems with the ACA (ie, beefing up the current tax credit structure, funding the Risk Corridor program which they deliberately defunded, fixing the family glitch, etc), which means the actual problems the exchanges genuinely are having would likely worsen. Meanwhile, Tom Price and Seema Verma will presumably do everything possible to continue to sabotage the law within the bounds of their authority (or beyond, at least in the case of Price), and then pin the blame on the law itself and Congressional Democrats.

In fact, this really has been the GOP (and Trump's) "Plan B" all along, as they've openly admitted:

Once again, from December:

The Republican Party already has their playbook for how to repeal the Affordable Care Act, cause massive disruption and damage to the healthcare market, kick potentially up to 29 million people off their healthcare coverage and get away with it by blaming it on the law itself (and, of course, President Obama). They're so certain that their plan will work that some of them are openly admitting the jaw-dropping chutzpah of it all:

That could lead to a mess for the roughly 10 million Americans currently getting coverage through the government-run marketplaces — and backlash against the GOP.

...But the enticements most likely to keep insurers in the exchanges are the ones in Obamacare that Republicans spent years denouncing as industry “bailouts” — subsidies that were supposed to insulate plans from big losses.

...Many Republicans would prefer to argue the Obamacare markets were already in their death throes before they took charge — the question is whether they can get away with it.

“The first question I think they’re trying to figure out is, do we actually own it for 2018?” said one health care lobbyist, speaking on background. “If premiums spike and plans exit, can we still blame it on Obama and get away with it? That’s one of the threshold questions that I don’t think they’ve answered.”

From two weeks ago:

President Donald Trump reportedly knows where he will pin the blame if the Republican health-care plan goes awry.

Trump told conservative groups Wednesday that, should the GOP health-care reform bill fail, he will let the Affordable Care Act (ACA) sputter and blame Democrats, CNN reported, citing sources at the gathering. He told at least some of the people gathered at the White House that their opposition to parts of the plan was "helping the other side," CNN said.
