Minnesota: @MNsure reminds residents w/expiring COBRA subsidies that they still have affordable coverage options available
Federal COBRA Subsidies are Ending This Month, but Minnesotans Have Affordable Health Coverage Options Through MNsure
ST. PAUL, Minn.—The federal subsidy for Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, or COBRA, expires on September 30. The subsidy, part of the American Rescue Plan stimulus package, has helped unemployed Minnesotans who chose to continue with their workplace health insurance plan stay covered during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Minnesotans who are losing this COBRA subsidy and are looking to keep their health care costs low should visit MNsure.org today to check out their health coverage options and see how much they can save,” said MNsure CEO Nate Clark. “Avoiding a gap in health coverage is more important than ever, so don’t wait.”
The end of the federal subsidy means Minnesotans and their dependents currently enrolled in COBRA coverage may qualify for a 60-day special enrollment period to sign up for a new health plan. During this enrollment window, MNsure is a one-stop-shop for exploring plans, discovering ways to save money on monthly premiums only available through MNsure, and enrolling in a new plan.
Minnesotans who received unemployment income at any time in 2021 can access extremely low-cost health insurance through MNsure through the end of the year. Qualifying individuals may find a private health insurance plan with a premium as low as $0 per month.
No matter their employment status, private health insurance is more affordable than ever for Minnesotans. Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, larger tax credits are available, which act as an instant discount to lower the cost of monthly premiums, and expanded eligibility for tax credits means more Minnesotans with middle incomes can take advantage of these savings. All Minnesotans who purchase health insurance through MNsure will be able to find a plan with premiums that cost no more than 8.5% of their household income.
MNsure has a statewide network of assisters who can help with the enrollment process: visit MNsure.org and select “Find free help” to get started today.
