#COVID19 Data: Nightly update of the sick and the dead.

Since tracking and analyzing data is what I'm best known for...and since I'm mostly stuck sitting in front of the computer all day whether I like it or not these days anyway...I've started my own daily COVID-19 spreadsheet. I've added a big yellow banner at the top of the site which links to it.

Again, I'm not the one who compiled the data itself--many other teams with far better resources than I have are doing that--but I'm pulling their work together and adding some additional context, such as per capita info by state/territory.

I also include the partisan lean of every state, which may sound cynical or tasteless...unless you've been paying attention to the news of late. That's exactly how Donald Trump sees it; he's literally giving red states whatever resources they ask for (or more) while deliberately starving the blue states (or even some purple states if their governors aren't "nice" enough to him) or giving them scraps.

With that in mind, here's this evening's main numbers. Be warned, they aren't pretty:

Nationally:

• 2.93 million Americans have been tested to date (8.8 per thousand)
• Another 26,600 tested positive today
• 587,000 have tested positive to date (1.8 per thousand)

• Another 1,500 Americans died today.
• Over 23,600 have died to date
• The U.S. mortality rate (based on positive tests) is now over 4.0%.
• The U.S. death toll has increased by "only" 26% over the past 3 days.

New York:

• Over 478,000 New Yorkers have been tested (2.5% of the population)
• Another 6,200 tested positive today
• Over 195,000 New Yorkers have tested positive to date (1.0% of the population)

• Another 671 New Yorkers died today.
• Over 10,000 New Yorkers have died of #COVID19 to date.

• New York's mortality rate (based on positive tests) is 5.1%
• New York's death toll has increased by "only" 28% over the past 3 days.

Michigan (my home state):

• Over 82,000 Michiganders have been tested (8.3 per thousand)
• Another 1,000 tested positive today; over 25,600 have tested positive to date

• Another 115 Michiganders died today.
• Over 1,600 Michiganders have died to date.
• Michigan has the highest mortality rate in the country (based on positive tests), aside from the N. Mariana Islands, at 6.3%.
• However, Michigan's death toll has "only" increased by 25% over the past 3 days...slightly below the national average for what I think is the first time in awhile.

Other States/Territories:

• Only one state, South Dakota, has seen their confirmed cases increase by more than 50% over the past 3 days (62%)

• Only 3 states (West Virginia, New Mexico and Maryland) have seen their death tolls increase by more than 50% over the past 3 days.

With this in mind, starting tomorrow evening I'll be downshifting these metrics again and looking at states which increase their 3-day cases/death tolls by 33% or more.

• Sadly, another 1,162 U.S. military cases were reported today, bringing that total up to over 4,500 cases and 15 deaths not attached to any specific state. There's also 698 members of the Navajo Nation who've tested positive, 24 of whom have died, as well as 149 American passengers on two cruise ships (3 of whom have died), and 3 expatriates living in Wuhan, China who were repatriated after testing positive.
